Roadie Rookie FAQs
By popular demand, here are your Rookie Geocacher Enough Road Rally FAQ’s:
1. Is a 4 wheel drive vehicle required? I’ve seen some pretty wild pictures that have me a little nervous!
No, you don’t have to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Can it make the rally a little easier? Sure. But all of the caches for the rally are hidden with Sleepyweasel’s Montana Mini-Van. As long as you stick to the provided maps and don’t try to auto-route to the caches, you should have no problems. If you do get stuck, phone numbers to reach the Sleepyweasels or Vanman for help are printed on the newspapers, and there are often other cachers that will try their best to get you rolling again. Many that attend that do have 4X4 vehicles bring towing equipment also. If all else fails we do have the phone number of a local towing company, but that has only happened once before.
2. You call this a Road Rally, so is it a race? Are there prizes for the first to finish?
No, this is absolutely not a race. This is more of a planned tour route then a true road rally race. If we were to reward the first place finishers, it would become a race which would require us to obtain a $5,000,000.00 personal liability insurance policy along with permission from every County Sheriff’s office that our routes run though and EMS on site. So feel comfortable to do this event at your own pace.
3. Please don’t tell me I have to put 50 caches into my gps by hand!
Yes you will. We want to make sure we start every team off with the same advantages/disadvantages. This is how it used to be done back in the “old day” of caching. Feel free to get creative!
4. Can we have a campfire at our camp site?
This year we will be allowed to! But, the fire will have to be in an elevated fire ring. The fair grounds don’t want us making fires right on the ground. We will have a big central fire pit for everyone to use. So take advantage of the social aspect of the event and come hang out with everyone!
5. Can I team up with other people? Is there a limit to the number of people in a team?
Yes you can. In fact, we strongly encourage it! Not only is it good for the environment, you’ll save some gas money that way and keep the rally routes a little less cluttered. And you can group up with as many or few as you want.
6. Do the coordinates listed on the Geocaching.com website take us to the correct campground?
Yes, the coords listed on GC.com will take you to this years camping site which will double as the kick off site on Saturday morning and finish on Sunday afternoon.
7. Do I run a Pocket Query beforehand to input the Geocaches?
You won’t need to run a PQ for the event caches. But, if you’re crazy enough to find more then the 50 caches for the Rally Game, we’d suggest running a PQ for the nearest caches within 20-30 miles of camp.
8. Can my team split up and each of us go get a different cache?
You could, but we wouldn’t suggest it. Everyone is going to be given their very own game sheet, so you’ll want to hit all the caches you can to fill it out. Plus these will all be live caches after the event you can log as finds!
9. Can 4 footed geobuddies come along?
Of course they can! Just make sure to clean up after them around camp.
10. Will there be power at camp for people with special needs such as a cpap?
Yes! There will also be running water.
11. Is there WiFi?
No, there is not WiFi available at the campsite. There is a McDonald’s nearby and a few other local businesses that offer WiFi. Last year there were a few people that could get net access from their cell phones.
12. Do we have to camp to join the fun?
Of course not! Camping is only part of the event. If you can only make it for a day or want to stay at a hotel, you’re more than welcome. And you can hang out at the camp site as long as you want, we just have to be out Sunday evening.
13. Where can I get updates as the event approaches?
We try to put updates everywhere we possibly can. We have our web site www.geocacherenough.com, a facebook group, discussions in MiGO’s forums www.mi-geocaching.org, twitter feeds and post notes to the GC.com event page. Selling SWAG (exp. Pathtags) and sponsorships is restricted on the GC.com event page, so we have to use these other communication tools.
